The TESOL Certificate course at Westminster College is intended for anyone seeking a career change or to acquire new skills. Many professional opportunities as teachers of the English language are open to those holding a Westminster College TESOL Certificate.

The TESOL/TESL/TEFL curriculum at Westminster College is designed to accommodate your needs. Our course is taught at university level and participants must be at least 18 years of age to attend.
* TESOL, TESL, and TEFL are widely interchangeable terms which essentially mean the same thing. Each of these terms is most commonly used in a different part of the world. At the end of our 50-hour in-class course, graduates receive a TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate which is recognized and accepted around the world (and which includes all components of TESOL, TESL and TEFL teacher training).
TESOL Program
Our TESOL/TESL teacher training certification course is comprehensive and dynamic. It is taught by native, experienced instructors.

TESOL Course Part 1
During 50 hours, participants are immersed in academic and practical training.
Course requirements: Laptop computer w/WiFi connection
TESOL Course Part I (25 hours):
• An overview of different methodologies, materials, and technologies
• Theories of second language learning
• Teaching Techniques
• Teaching Practice and Observation
• Phonology - Phonetics - Morphology - Syntax - Semantics - Pragmatics
• Assessing students' knowledge
• How the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) are learned.
TESOL Course Part 2
During 50 hours, participants are immersed in academic and practical training.
Course requirements: Laptop computer w/WiFi connection
• Language Classroom Practices
• Learn how to plan lessons and design activities
• Become familiar with techniques for promoting interaction
• Provide feedback, utilize textbooks and manage a classroom.
• Student Teaching Practicum
• Write a description of the ATPAL system
Additional Curriculum Details
→ Second Language Acquisition - Introduction to second language learning; characteristics of a good language learner; contrastive analysis and error correction; teaching approaches; special consideration for teaching children, adolescents and adults.
→ Classroom Practicalities - Planning and Managing the ESL Classroom- warm-ups; planning guidelines; initial language assessment; lesson planning elements; lesson plan templates; classroom management/discipline; teaching across proficiency levels.
→ Teaching Listening - Strategies to enhance listening ability; sources of listening material (DVD’s/songs/videos); suggested exercises; evaluating listening comprehension; listening for tags and key words.
→ Teaching Speaking - Focus on oral/aural English competencies; speaking for social interaction; following and giving directions. Other forms of speaking skills targeted include: pronunciation, pace, stress, sounds and accents.
→ Teaching Reading - Choosing and using appropriate ESL reading materials (such as children’s picture books); pre-reading and post-reading strategies and skills.
→ Teaching Structure and Writing - Teaching context-appropriate writing styles; the place of formal grammar teaching; review of grammatical structures; communicative grammar practice; categories of classroom writing; writing at different levels.
→ Integrating the Four Skills - Theoretical background: approaches to teaching the four skills (content –based teaching; task –based teaching; theme-based teaching); overview of approaches for integration.
→ Materials in the Classroom - Textbook assessment; visual aides (pictures, flashcards, charts; technology (audio, video, computers); drama and role-plays; games.
→ Job Search Skills and Practicum - How to write a TESOL/TESL resume and cover letter, interview tips, negotiating a contract, culture shock, what to expect of your first week teaching, a practice teaching component and a detailed critique and evaluation.

- To reserve a place, Westminster College must receive payment of Registration Fee ($ 75) no less than three weeks before scheduled start date. Full Payment must be received no less than two weeks before scheduled start date.

Refund Policy
1) Registration Fee ($ 75): Non-refundable.
2) Tuition Fee:
a. Withdrawal prior to course start date:
- If written notice of withdrawal is given more than 30 days prior to start of course: 100% refund of course fee.
- If written notice of withdrawal is given between 30 days and course start date: 75% refund of course fee.
b. Withdrawal after course start date:
- If written notice of withdrawal is given within the first 5 hours of the course: 75% refund of course fee.
- If written notice of withdrawal is given between the first 6 and 10 hours of the course: 50% refund of course fee.
- If written notice of withdrawal is given after the first 10 hours of the course: No refund is available.
